My non-gaming friends often ask me what im playing. Sometimes its ez. Red Dead Redemption… its a western. Gears of War 2.. its a shooter. Grand Theft Auto… its a open world game, you can do whatever you want. Today I was asked about what I was playing.. I said Crackdown 2. The conversation from there went like this

‘so, what do you do in this crackdown game’.

I replied “collect orbs”

‘what are orbs’

“they increase your agility so you can jump higher”

‘why do you need to jump higher’

“so you can get to more orbs”

‘and that helps you how?’

“higher orbs give you more agility points”

‘and let me guess, that makes it so you can get more orbs’

“BINGO! you got it”

‘so, youve spent all week in a game doing nothing but running around, collecting orbs’

“well, when you put it that way…. umm… yeah… guess I have”

‘and this is fun’

“yep, LOADS of fun, omg, they added orbs that run from you, so you find them then you have to chase them down…..”

about this point they shook their head and game me a “WTF” look. and this is why you cant explain being a gamer to non gamer… 4 hours collecting orbs and i had a blast. and no, i dont care that theres no story at all.

but did i tell you about the runaway orb i caught in the middle of a gang stronghold fight when i jumped for 4 stories up while shooting a guy with a rocket launcher taking out his truck and a whole slew of infected at the same time while landing in the water?? it was un-friggin-real. yep… thats why we cant explain what we love. no one else would listen.
